Text Box: I hope that you had a Happy & a Healthy Rosh HaShanah and a Happy Chanukah too!
This is the first paper edition of Jewish Celiacs Newsletter. It began as a web site by the same name in early 2000. I created it after I had discovered that I had Celiac Disease in late 1999. I set it up on Yahoo, then moved it to MSN Communities and finally settled down at AIT (Advanced Internet Technologies), JCN’s present location. Jewish Celiacs Newsletter can be located on the web at www.jewishceliacs.com.
The purpose of this paper edition is the same as the one online, to bring you the latest news and views on Celiac Disease; research, shopping sites (online and off), cooking tips, Text Box: recipes and stories of survival.
I welcome all who have CD, which, in the beginning was thought to have affected only the Irish and Italians and their offspring in Europe and abroad. That perception has changed. Children of mixed parentage, one being either an affected, (white) Irish, or Italian male, or female, and the other being of African, or Asian heritage are also possible candidates for Celiac. White-skinned Jews like me can and do have Celiac too though both of my parents were Y’hudeem (Jews) as well as Levites.

Text Box: How I Discovered That I Had Celiac Disease
Text Box: I discovered that I had Celiac Disease, or Sprue, in November, 1999, after three weeks of continuous diarrhea. I ate white rice and took the anti-diarrhea medicine, Imodium™, but none of it seemed to work. It left me weak and worried. So, being a Vietnam-era Veteran, I went to the VA Hospital in West Philly and complained to my care-giver, June Lauer. She set me up with a Dr. Katz who advised me to eat normally and take a blood test. When the test had shown signs of Celiac, Dr. Katz Text Box: decided to perform a biopsy of my small intestine, which also leaned in that direction. Then, he told me to lay off wheat, rye, barley and oats for three days and to report back to my care-giver. how I was feeling afterwards. Needless to say, I had felt much better.
Next, I went back to Dr. Katz. He and two other physicians who asked me about my ancestry, which I thought was odd at first, had informed me that I had all the signs and symptoms Text Box: Jewish Celiacs Newsletter

You don’t have to be Irish, or Italian to have Celiac Disease & You don’t have to be a Jew to eat Kosher food.
