Text Box: At the end of the year, 2001, I had lunch in downtown Philly with a former friend at a salad place and I told the owner to hold the croutons (bread crumbs). That night, I visited my sister’s and played with her new puppy after which I was overcome with one of the strangest feelings of helplessness, which included feeling ice cold and floating free. My sister drove me to Nazareth Hospital, which admitted me as a possible heart attack. I remember telling Text Box: them, when asked about allergies, etc. that I was a Celiac and preferred a Kosher diet among other things. They kept me under observation for five days. During that time, the dietician and her crew had sent me several meals that included “oat meal,” “French toast,” “ham,” “rolls” and other killer delights. I complained to the dietitian at least three times, but to no avail. It was like talking to the wall. I was glad to get out of there in one piece.
About six months ago, an article appeared in the Celiac Sprue Association newsletter, Lifeline, which I receive as a member. It was a front page piece titled “Can a person with celiac disease eat safely in a hospital?” by Mark Dinga, M.Ed., R.D., Text Box: Are Celiacs Safe In Any Hospital?
